Rai has worked with clients who focus on international development, immigration and refugee services, human rights, domestic and foreign policy, the legal sector, amongst others. Throughout her roles, Rai has focused on policy analysis and development, research such as primary and secondary methods, course development and facilitation for training activities, and public speaking engagements where she has organized, led, and hosted events as well as participated as an invited guest.

In Rai's spare time, she is the founder & CEO of the Canadian NGO Global Rights Defenders (GRD) which advocates for refugees and human rights worldwide. GRD focuses on research, policy analysis & advocacy and community engagement. GRDs mission is to empower displaced populations to achieve socio-economic independence and self-reliance, and to build their capacities to ensure that their rights, freedoms and dignities are being upheld and valued.
Areas of focus: Migration Governance, Self-reliance, Capacity Building.
Currently Rai is based in Nairobi, Kenya implementing a research project focused on barriers to socio-economic inclusion for refugees living with Kakuma Refugee Camp and Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement.​

Through her organization, Rai is the host and producer of the podcast series Global Rights Defenders; is the Rapporteur for the refugee-led consortium Voices Rising based in Kakuma Refugee Camp; has provided capacity training activities on project management with refugee advocates; is a mentor to youth advocates; expert advisor for fellow NGOs, academic institutes, think tanks and related; and has engaged in several public speaking events including hosting and being invited as an expert guest.
